TEMPE-- Sophomore
guard, April Cook, scored a career-high 33 points for Washington State (6-10;
1-10) in their victory over Arizona State (14-8; 6-5), 66-62, on Saturday
afternoon at Wells Fargo Arena.
This was the first win for Washington State in their past 11
games, first Pac-10 victory of the season and their first win on Arizona
State’s home court since Jan. 30, 1997. The Devils were up by as many as 13
points in the first half, but the Cougars used a 16-4 run midway through the
second half and took their first lead with 7:47 left in the game on a 3-pointer
by Cook. Cook scored 21 of her 33 points in the second half. KiKi Moore helped
Washington State with 16 points.
Arizona State’s biggest stat of the game wasn’t in points,
rebounds or assists, rather, it was in turnovers. The Devils committed a
season-high 29 turnovers on the game, with every player having at least one,
except for Joy Burke who only played a total of two minutes. There were 57 turnovers all together for both the Devils and Cougars, 39 of them coming
in the first half.
Kayli Murphy recorded her 4th career
double-double, and second consecutive, with a team-high 14 points and 10
rebounds for the Devils. Tenaya Watson finished with 11 points, Kali Bennett
and Alex Earl had 10 points, and the Cougars held Sun Devil leading-scorer
Danielle Orsillo, to only six points in the game.
Arizona State heads to Corvallis to face the Oregon State
Beavers on Thursday night at 8pm MT.
